Citizenship

Simplified Naturalization Process

Hungarian nationality law is based on the principle of “ius sanguinis.” Hungarian citizenship is acquired mainly on the basis of a Hungarian parent, or by naturalization.  A person acquires Hungarian citizenship at birth if at least one parent is a Hungarian citizen. For this purpose the place of birth is irrelevant.

The modification of the Hungarian citizenship law that came into force on January 1, 2011 allows all ethnic Hungarians to apply for naturalization if they are able to prove a minimum knowledge of the Hungarian language and provide evidence that they have Hungarian ancestry. There’s no need to be a resident in Hungary, there’s no test in constitutional studies, there’s no need for any proof of stable livelihood – hence the term “simplified” naturalization.
