Governing Fidesz Wins Clear Majority in Hungarian Elections
Posted on: April 16, 2014

Hungary held Parliamentary elections on April 6th. The center right governing party of Fidesz and their Christian-democratic partner (KDNP) won a clear majority.

The results with 98.97% of the votes counted show Fidesz received 44.54% of the popular vote beating the opposition alliance of the Socialists (MSZP), Together – Dialogue for Hungary (Együtt –PM), Democratic Coalition (DK), Hungarian Liberal Party (MLP), who received 25.99% of the popular vote. The extreme right Jobbik received 20.54% and the green-liberal Politics Can Be Different (LMP) received 5.26% of ballots cast.

The results guarantee a comfortable majority in Parliament for Fidesz. We still need to wait for the final results to arrive from all constituencies in order to know whether Fidesz will have a 2/3 majority in the new Parliament.

In his victory speech following the elections Prime Minister Viktor Orbán highlighted that the results show that Hungarian voters said no to hatred and yes to the European Union.
